So, a bit of a surreal day yesterday.  We did the photo shoot for the album cover, and it was our first 'real' photo shoot.  Suprisingly painless, but a bit strange nonetheless.  We went through Roy Cox Photography.  Roy does work for some of the top agencies in the world and has won a roomful of awards but enjoys helping out local bands and actors, so he offers cut rates to us starving artists.

His studio is up in Baltimore, and we arrived there around 9:30 am (Brett showed a little bit later).  It was a very cool room--great sound system, all done out in red and black with very stylish furniture and decor.  Kind of what you'd expect a professional photographer's studio to look like.  Very nifty.  The makeup artist showed around 9:45.  Yes, a makeup artist.  I felt really special ;)  She stayed for the whole shoot, just in case I needed a touch up.  She did a really good job, too.  I need to figure out how the hell she got my eyes to look so good...  Application took about 20 minutes and I felt like I was wearing a hockey mask by the end of it but I don't normally wear makeup, so anything more than eyeshadow feels kind of strange to me.  She assured me that although it felt strange, it's necessary.  Makeup doesn't translate onto film exactly the same way as it looks in person.  And it did look very good.

Roy showed up shortly after 10 am.  He doesn't look like a stereotypical fashion photographer.  He actually looks more like a coach for someone's little league team than anything else.  But man, can that guy take a picture.  The whole shoot only took about an hour or so, and he got some ~amazing~ shots.  I can't wait for you guys to see these--they're gorgeous.  And I really think they capture the mood.  He listened to some of our cuts, we talked about our 'look' and the message we were trying to get across with the cover and he really pulled everything together.  I highly recommend him to anyone needing head shots or band photography--the guy's brilliant.

So it was only a little after 11 am when we got out.  We were in Baltimore, right near downtown, so we went and grabbed some food (and two pitchers of Yuengling) in the inner harbor, then went to the Baltimore Aquarium.  Hadn't been there in a few years and just couldn't resist the opportunity.  It was pretty packed, but we had a good time nonetheless.  Lots of cool fishies.

Everyone was pretty beat after our aquarium trip, so we decided to call it a day and head home.  The drive back took a while--we ran into a traffic snarl on 70 that was no fun whatsoever.  Came home, cooked dinner.  We were feeling a bit better after we ate, so Dad, Jay, BJ and I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Go see it, it's really funny.  Demented, but funny.  I love Tim Burton :)

And that was Wednesday for me :)

I'm really pleased that the shoot is out of the way--this means I can set our fantabulous graphic artist onto designing the album art.  I'm starting to get really excited about 'Fire and Water.'  I just can't wait to have a copy in my greedy little hands...

His use of color was really what did it for me--I love hypersaturation. He did ours through a blue filter and in post-prod, the other colors will be brightened. I'm so excited!!! :)

I'm hoping it will be. Just moody enough without passing into scary or depressing ;)

He was really fast, too. Basically, he listened to some tracks, talked to us about our ‘image’, set us up, took a bunch of shots, moved us around a bit, took some more shots, and about 45 minutes later we were done, and he had these awesome shots that he showed us. I was really impressed, I thought there would’ve been more fiddling around, and trying things out. Very cool.

And I can't wait for my chance to get into the studio in a couple of weeks to add my own coolness to the CD...

No kidding. It's so bizarre to hear the tracks without your countermelodies on them....

Yeah, the stuff we listened to yesterday sounded funny... especially Persephone.

Very true, although I have to admit, I was really impressed how good that version of “Wake Up & Be” we recorded in the practice room sounded on his speakers. But I agree, it was weird listening to all those older clips. I can’t wait until we’ve got newer recordings with more of the parts on them. Yay!

And of course all I could hear were the mistakes in the guitar solo

what studio are you using?

I forget what it's called, Mountain Song studios or something or ruther... it's in Virginia, AFAIK.

I'm taking off a 1.5 weeks in August to record Alhazred CD, and two of those days will be for Revel Moon recording...

As Far As I Know

Yep, Mountain Song is the name: http://www.shenandoahacoustics.com/mtsong.html . He’s upgraded a bit since this webpage was created, and I thought about mentioning him when you were looking for some place, but he doesn’t have some of the requirements you were looking for, like a separate room for drums (he runs a snake downstairs to record me, which works pretty well since I’m not even close to being as loud as a trap set) or his own piano. He does a great job, though, has a great ear, and his price is quite good.

well as far as where we are going to record. We are going to try to record just the drum tracks in a really nice studio and then the rest we are going to try to record at home. We are doing one test track like that to see if the quality will be good enough.

Yeah, drums are hard to record right. Andrew does a great job with my hand percussion, but I don’t know about trap. I’ve heard there’s a couple places around the DC area that are supposed to be known for how well they record trap set, although I can’t remember who it is, and I think, if I remember right, they were really expensive.

originally we were going to go to Germany to record which would have been AMAZING. But he cannot afford to fly all six of us. At first it would have been just four..

That would’ve been cool. Germany is a very cool country, and you could’ve had really yummy beer while you were there…

…wow, it all comes back to the beer for me, doesn’t it? Oh well… ;)
